MPG Apprentice wins UK wide Gold Medal

Congratulations to Sean Dooner, part of the MPG Apprentice scheme, who has won the Gold Medal in Plastering and Dry Lining in the World Skills UK competition.

After winning the regional heat in Leeds in June, Sean spent four days at the NEC Birmingham Skill Builds Show, sponsored by the CITB and British Gypsum, competing against other finalists around the UK.

Sean demonstrated his skills in Drylining, taping and jointing and plastering which he has gained from training at Barking College and on MPG sites in Central London including Battersea Reach, Burdett Rd and lately the Canary Wharf project at Wood Wharf.

After several years working as a carer, Sean started working as a labourer on the MPG/ISG Aldermans House site. Knowing that Apprenticeships are for people of any age, MPG offered Sean, who left school over 20 years ago, a training contract, so that he could further his skills and become a Dry Liner under the MPG training scheme, with the help of the CITB and BDC College.

Over the last year Sean has worked with MPG and attended several training courses including British Gypsum and DULUX.

MPG have run an apprentice scheme for several years now in conjunction with the help of our colleagues including CITB, the FIS, London Borough Councils, Canary Wharf, Berkeley Group, BDC and CONEL College, and many others, and are looking forward to expanding our scheme into a Training Academy.

Michael Gavin, Managing Director of MPG said "It's extremely satisfying to see the potential in people identified and then realized through good mentoring and investment. Sean deserves all the plaudits he gets, hard work & dedication once he was giving an opportunity has resulted in this fantastic achievement."
